Breaking All Those Bad, Unhealthy Habits

Five Habits That Cause Weight Gain

If you are overweight and cannot seem to lose weight no matter how hard you try, it might be time to examine your habits. A great quote from Emerson Ralph Waldo puts it into perspective " Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny." If we are sowing the wrong habits we set ourselves up for ultimate failure. Below are five habits that may be sabotaging your weight loss goals.

1. Too much TV: Are you aware of how much time you spend in front of the TV? It is easy to come home from work and park ourselves in front of the TV for hours at a time. One of the reasons this works against our weight loss goals is the advertisers of junk food and fast food are good, the reason advertisers pay millions of dollars for ads is because it works. Even the healthiest individuals can succumb to temptations. You are also burning very few calories while viewing TV. Plus most of us eat unhealthy snacks while watching TV and we don't monitor portion control.

2. We Skip Breakfast: Skipping breakfast is linked to obesity. By not having breakfast you are more likely to eat more at other meals. Eating a small healthy breakfast will give you more energy for morning activities, so you will burn more fat.

3. Eating Three Large Meals: Studies have shown that it is better for weight loss to eat six small meals daily than to eat two or three large ones. Eating six small meals spread out over the entire day, helps regulate blood sugar and control cravings. Just be sure that the meals are small and total up to your needed calories intake.

4. Not getting enough Sleep: If you are in the habit of staying up late and not getting enough sleep then you may be causing your body to store weight. Many studies show a correlation between your weight gain and sleep deprivation. If you are tired in the morning and feeling sluggish you may want to try and get an extra hour or two of sleep. It's hard to exercise and be productive if you are tired.

5. Eating Fast Food: This one is a no brainer. If you are going through a drive through for your lunch or dinner, than you are definitely going in the wrong direction in the pursuit of your weight loss goals. Prepare healthy meals ahead of time and take them with you.

Once you identify the habits that cause weight gain, you can then go about the process of fixing the issues. You do not have to fix all your bad habits at once. Trying to do too much can overwhelm you. Instead take one habit and decide to change it. To break the bad habit you have to replace it with a more productive habit. As an example if you watch too much TV, start scheduling your viewing; make it no more than 2 hours a day. Replace the remaining time with more healthy alternatives, like going for walks, runs or to the gym. Stick with the new plan for at least 21 days, once you have made it this far you have created a new and healthy habit. After 21 days you can start working on the next habit you would like to change.

Habits of a Weight-Healthy Lifestyle

The fact remains that for any diet to work a person needs to change how they approach food. By this it is meant, how is food consumed? How is food prepared? For a diet to really work, a person needs to change how they cook their food, how they eat their food, and how they use their food. Many people have unhealthy eating habits so they have gained weight. They need to change their eating habits to lose weight and to keep it off.

Learning to change the eating habits is only half of the dieting system. The other half is implementing exercise. Yet this article is about the right diet of foods for extended weight loss. So keep in mind this is only the first half of the weight loss solution.

There are foods that need to be removed from the diet in order to lose weight and to maintain a healthy weight. The food that fried should be avoided as much as possible, the added fats in the food are stored in the body and turned to fat when you do not burn the additives.

Eating foods high in protein such as whey, lean beef, chicken, tuna, turkey, salmon, and eggs help with weight loss when added to the diet. The fatty acids in the fish are beneficial for a healthy diet including stronger bones, teeth, nails, and hair.

Remove dairy products that are high in fat content. Try to replace the fattening foods with a low fat dairy product to limit the consumption of the fat in the dairy products. This also includes limiting the intake of the high fat snacks, which add pounds and inches.

Add essential fatty acids foods that include nuts, seeds, and flax oil to your diet. They are great sources of the essential fatty acids that are needed by the body to function properly. Eat the nuts and seeds as a snack instead of the chips or other unhealthy snacks.

Add water to your diet. You should consume at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. The water helps to hydrate the body and to flush out harmful toxins. Water will also help to make you feel fuller and eat less too.

Add a good quality multi-vitamin to your daily diet. The vitamins will help your body with the essential nutrients your normal diet does not contain.

Changing your eating habits to a healthier diet will help you lose weight and maintain the desired weight you want to have.

Ways to Improve Diet to Better Habits

Some good tips on weight loss that I have found helpful, I will include in this article. One good tip is: Eat a big breakfast. Eat plenty of carbs in the morning, and fruit, and yogurt, and a big glass of juice. That way you'll have plenty of energy throughout the day.

Then have an average sized lunch, and a small supper. You can have a few snacks throughout the day, like raisins, or nuts, or fruit. But avoid sugar or salty things. If you want, you can have maybe 100 calories of sugary or salty things, per day. And treat yourself based on your metabolism to one or two sugary or salty things (like pastries, chips, ice scream, cake), once or twice a week.

Drink coffee when you're hungry. Food shouldn't be the center of your day. But if you're really craving something, drink coffee. Add some milk, or some sugar, and cinnamon. Boil the milk, and turn it into a latte. Or add a whole cup full of ice, and turn it into an iced coffee.

My coffee maker broke, and if you don't have a coffee maker like me,drink water when you are hungry. If you are craving sugar- grab a piece of fruit. If you can't drink water or fruit, take a nap. Read a book, play a computer game. Talk to a friend. Do a hobby. I usually take a nap when I feel hungry, recharge myself, and then get up and begin what I do to keep myself busy. It's OK to cheat a little and recharge yourself, because it's not really cheating, it is giving yourself what you deserve.

Also- chew gum when you are hungry. The feeling of gum in your mouth makes you not hungry for awhile. Another thing- you don't need to be chewing something, or drinking something, or satisfying your hunger to be satisfying yourself.

You could be reading a book- or exercising, or talking to a friend, or watching a movie. Whenever you have the urge to pop something in your mouth, replace it with something, a little more advanced. And you can go on up the ladder until you have reached a higher level- just like a video game- keep advancing levels. You don't need to start at the top.

You don't need to start at level 10. Start at level 1. Instead of replacing junk food with running the 26 mile marathon, replace junk food with watching a music video of some band you really enjoy a lot. Something really easy to listen to. Play a video game- do something really fun. Then you'll start looking forward to fun instead of junk food. And then- replace the fun with higher levels of things- until you reach your ultimate goal- whatever is your vision.

I Need To Change My Dieting Habits

Even if you're a seasoned dieter like I am, you wonder how you can get to the next step or how to make diet a part of your lifestyle and actually make it work for you.

If this sounds all too familiar read on! One of the first things you need to ask yourself is this: "You need to determine where you are in order to know what you need to do next". Make sense? Whether you're thinking about dieting for the first time in your life or you're trying to make your new diet something permanent, there are specific things you can do to take your diet to the next level.

Are you at the point where you may be sick of having people in your life talking about dieting? Maybe you may be completely disinterested in changing anything about yourself or your routine. Your happy with being size xxx, avoiding friends and family, not doing the things you use to do (Note to self: take inventory of your life right now and see just what activities and events that you no longer do that maybe you enjoyed one year ago, five years ago, longer?) Do you have some health problems or feel a like you'd like to be a smaller clothing size, but you're not really that interested in dieting yet. If that's the case, you're in the "pre-contemplation" stage of dieting. That simply means that you're not interested in making any kind of changes in your eating habits and activity levels right now. That's OK if you are happy with that decision; don't feel like you have to beat yourself up over "I have go on a diet" sometimes we just need to give ourselves permission to say it is OK.

However, you may be having that nagging feeling that even though you're not interested in a change, it may be something good for you? We all have that inner voice that tells us to do something even when we really don't want to. I know losing 10-20 pounds would lower my cholesterol and blood pressure and every day I start out with "this is the day!" Just how long it last depends on what happens during the day- if you can relate to this you know just what I am talking about: Life Happens! But we march on...

I know you are anxious to get started with a new diet but you need to get your mind used to the idea of making a change. You also don't want to dive into something for which you aren't prepared for. Instead, take a few days or even week(s) to educate yourself and find out what you think will work best for you. Remember you did not arrive at this spot overnight so give yourself time to prepare which will increase your chances of success.
