Top 4 Fitness Tips That Will Help You Look Ten Years Younger

Living in a healthy and fit body can be an amazing confidence builder. It can also, remove years from your appearance. To tell the truth, we all desire to keep that youthful look for as long as possible. Losing some unwanted pounds, will help you reshape your body. For most, the face will be the first area that will be notably different. Facial fine lines can be reduced and the new look will also bring on a new confidence in the way you carry yourself.

Take a mental look back 10 years ago and imagine what your weight was then. Let that weight be your milestone. Set your fitness goal for 2013, with that weight number in mind as incentive. Once you achieve that goal, parley your success and keep going. Below are four tips to make the journey easier.

Tip #1 - Go Shopping

Before you start your fitness quest, I suggest that you go shopping. Purchase that nice outfit in the size that you aspire to be. The thrill of shopping for clothes in a smaller size will help keep you motivated. Once you get your new outfit home, take a photo of it and post it on your refrigerator. This will be your daily reminder to stay on point.

Tip #2 - Get Rid of Bad Habits

Over the past 10 years, I am sure that you have developed some bad health habits that contributed to your weight gain. It's time to forge some good habits. A good place to start is in the kitchen. If what's in your refrigerator or cabinets, conflict with your fitness goals then, it's time for it to go. If it's open, toss it in the garbage. If it's unopened, bag for charity. As adults, we all know what is healthy and what's not. It's time to be honest with yourself and say "I don't need this stuff anymore". Bad foods only produce bad results.

Tip #3 - Exercise

As part of this whole process, exercise is a must. You don't even have to join a health club. As long as you've got gravity and a plan, you can get a good workout. Although you can lose weight without exercise, you must have muscle to facilitate the expenditure of calories. This means that if you decide to not take my advice, your results will come much slower than you want.

Tip #4 - You Must Hydrate

It's recommended that you drink at least eight 8 ounces glasses of pure water a day. This is not a difficult habit to start. Furthermore, if you start your day with a glass as soon as you wake up, it will be even easier. Weird but true. Remember, your body is mostly comprised of water. It's vital to your bodies' functionality, so drink up.

The above fitness tips are just a small sample of what my members receive from my new membership website called, Just 4 Men Fitness.

Can't Keep Your New Year's Resolution?

It's that time of year again when we reflect on how we haven't met our own expectations. For many people, every year begins with a New Years Resolution to get in better shape, and lose some weight.

If you've done the same routine of dieting over and over again and expect different results, that's the definition of insanity!

The fact is that despite following a diet, and exercising, 95% of dieters fail to keep the weight off for more than a few months to a couple of years. It's because the actual premise of dieting is flawed, rather than the dieter!

That means simply, dieting is the cause of the weight gain, not your lack of discipline and slothfulness! You are NOT guilty as charged! But the diet industry is happy to offer you the newest, best solution that will guarantee your easy, fast weight loss. The only problem is, it doesn't work!

Despite the "lose weight fast" schemes, losing weight is a complex issue. There isn't a "one-size-fits-all" solution. However, one thing that affects the majority of dieters is STRESS. And mostly your doctor and other diet plans completely ignore the effect of stress, or at best pay lip service to its effect on your weight and your ability to lose weight and keep it off.

How does stress affect your weight? It's been estimated that over 80% of weight gain is due to "emotional eating". That means that when you are unhappy, frustrated, angry, or a feeling a different upsetting emotion, you reach for food for comfort. There's even a term for it: "Comfort Food". If emotional eating is a problem for you, why would you expect that going on a diet is going to solve you weight issue? It won't!

That's just one way that stress has an effect on your weight.

Chronic stress, or serial stress (what I call death from a thousand paper cuts) has another huge effect on your weight. Release of cortisol is your body's normal response to manage quickly dissipating stress. That's the kind of stress you experience from averting a collision by pulling out of the way from a speeding car. Once the danger is gone, so is your stress. However, so many people are suffering from unremitting stress: from relationship problems, divorce, financial difficulties or loss of work, illness, and the long list of other stressors. This chronic stress actually changes your body physiologically, and makes it harder if not impossible to lose weight!

Many people do not realize that going on a diet is a chronic stressor as well! Your body has a finely tuned system, like a self-adjusting thermostat that works very well to keep your body at a set point. "Eat less and exercise more" is the recipe to actually slow down your metabolism, and insure that you will GAIN weight! When you eat less, your body's thermostat slows your metabolism to prevent you from starving. And at the same time, it makes you feel lethargic to keep those fat cells in storage mode! Similarly, over-exercising sends a message of stress to your body, and in order to maintain your weight set point, your brain sends you a signal to eat more! It's beyond your conscious control! So you see the "myth-information" of eat less and exercise more actually sabotages your ability to lose weight!

Yes, you can get yourself into better shape and lose weight next year, but it won't be by following the same flawed plan of diet and exercise! I bet that made you feel less stressed already! Stress relief must be high on your list. But the best way to deal with stress is to make yourself more resilient, and stop stressing the small stuff. You may be surprised to learn that you could be one of those people who actually has to eat more (of the right things) in order to lose weight! Diet information is confusing and contradictory at best. Be mindful, and pay attention to how you feel, because your body will tell you when what you are doing "feels right".

Make this New Years Resolution to successfully manage your stress, which will help your weight and fitness goals. Because your weight is not just about what you're eating, it's what's eating you!

Already Broken Your New Year's Resolution to Lose Weight?

The beginning of a new year brings resolutions galore of losing weight and getting healthy. Sound familiar? Deprivation diets abound and a couple weeks later they are abandoned. The journey to weight loss and better health shouldn't be one of the worst experiences of your life. Here's a few key ideas that can help you achieve your goals and make lifetime changes with no crash diet.

1. Keep hydrated.

Are you drinking water? Getting properly hydrated will make a huge difference to your weight loss efforts. In fact, every function in your body is influenced by the quantity and quality of the water your drink.

How much? Drink 6-18 cups of water each day. A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces each day.

Start your day right by drinking lemon water: 2 cups of lukewarm filtered water with the freshly squeezed juice from ½ lemon. It helps cleanse the digestive system, ignite your metabolism, buffer excess acids and flush the cellular toxins that have been released during the night. This is especially awesome first thing upon waking.

Wanna be a water ninja? While drinking simple lemon water is amazing for you, you can take it even further. Add a pinch of sea or Himalayan salt to your glass. Why? It will lower the surface tension of the water allowing it to penetrate your cells even better. When the water can get into your cells, the toxins can get flushed out. Translation: weight loss. Pretty cool, huh?

2. Go GREEN!

There are thousands upon thousands of phytochemicals in greens. Phytochemicals are a fancy word for plant nutrients that are available by simply eating greens. A lab cannot create these. You cannot buy these in a pill. They are the magic that will change your health and life. The more greens that you add to your daily diet the better. Make a salad with a variety of greens. Be creative and regularly mix and match different varieties so your body can take advantage of a large array of nutrients. Throw a variety of greens into a daily smoothie. One of my favorite authors, Dr. Joel Fuhrman advocates eating a pound of greens daily. This may seem like a lot, and it is, but if you're eating salads at meals and stuffing your smoothies with greens it is not unreachable. It's a nice goal to have regardless of whether you are able to meet it every day. I can speak from experience that I felt a profound improvement in my health (and shed pounds) when I made eating greens a high priority.

3. Eliminate or Reduce Processed foods

This is a big one, I know. Don't throw in the towel. Focus on at least reducing the amount of processed foods in your diet. I could go on and on about this, but I will state it as simply as possible. If you can buy it in a box on the shelf at the store there's a really good chance it is garbage to your body. That is blunt but it is true. Always look at the ingredient list. Ask yourself, "Are these ingredients simple and clear?" Pay especially close attention to the top 3 ingredients. Were the ingredients created in a laboratory? Are there more than a handful of ingredients? Can you pronounce each ingredient and tell a friend what it is? If not, it is likely not good for you. The sad fact is that lab created ingredients (i.e. fructose corn syrups) and foods have a negative impact on your body. Your body will treat the processed ingredients like foreign invaders and will struggle to get the nutrition from them despite the claims on the package.

I ate processed foods much of my life and still do on occasion. I will always be honest about that. The world we live in makes it really hard to ALWAYS avoid processed foods. I do my best. I'm not perfect and I'm okay with that. My favorite motto that helps me to keep this in balance is "When you eat good most of the time, it's okay to eat bad some of the time."

Eliminating or at least significantly reducing processed foods from your diet will have a positive impact on your health, especially when combined with the other simple ideas.

4. Adding in/Crowding Out Philosophy

Take it slowly! Here's a great philosophy that is gentle and practical: When you add in the good, you crowd out the bad. For example, I used to eat a waffle for breakfast. I realized that eating waffles was not helping me lose the weight. So I added in a morning smoothie. I didn't tell myself that I couldn't eat waffles. I never put that pressure on myself; however, my nutritious smoothie was very filling and easily got me through the morning hours until lunch. I had crowded out the waffle without even trying, without going on a diet or even feeling deprived. I knew I could eat a waffle again anytime so I never had to "miss" it. See how it works? Diets are for the birds! Just add in the good and you'll crowd out the bad.

One last note: DO NOT GIVE UP! It is okay to get discouraged. It's okay to have a bad day, to fall off the "wagon". It's OK! Don't expect perfection! View your journey as an experiment. Work at it and seek others that will support and be excited with you!

What Is a Good New Year's Resolution? - Finding the Motivation to Achieve Your Weight Loss Goals

What is the first step one must take to develop a life changing habit? A habit that will transform your physical appearance, instill a solid work ethic, and incorporate into your mind the necessary motivation and confidence to overcome ANY obstacle you encounter. The answer is quite simple... in fact, you will be thrilled to know that you have already taken this crucial first step!

The answer lies in the simple "IDEA" that you have decided you would like to improve your physical appearance. Think of it this way... The person you have become at this very moment, and the habits you have become slave to are a direct result of one thing. The ideas that you have fostered and the actions you have performed as a result of those ideas. This is the beauty of the human mind. You have the power to plant a tiny seed (your idea), apply proper water and sunlight ( finding motivation and performing actions), and allowing your seed to grow and flourish into the tallest, healthiest redwood in the forest ( your own personal universe)!

All successful people have acquired and utilized this knowledge. Imagine the things you could accomplish once you have accepted this theory. The theory that you are the master creator of your own personal universe. Great, so now what? We have laid the foundation to our future simply by realizing that we already possess the power to change everything about ourselves and our environment. Now we need to build on that foundation. This is where things may get a little tricky on you, depending on what pre-conceived notions you have about yourself. DO NOT get discouraged just yet, you still have much to learn about your potential!

The next great quality we must learn to master is self-confidence. With the proper motivation we can accomplish ANYTHING! This is no secret... However, this second step seems to be the hardest for most people simply because they do not stay motivated. When you form an idea that you strongly believe in you get a rush, a natural high if you will. At the moment of your idea you are instantly motivated to transform that idea into a reality. Therefore motivation is not something you need to acquire. Motivation is a quality you that you already possess! The only trick to this is to maintain your motivation. You have to base your life around this idea you had. Constantly remind yourself of your goals and the path will present itself to you.

With proper maintenance of your idea, your motivation will seem endless. Thus allowing you to ACT on your IDEA with CONFIDENCE. This is a fool-proof approach to conquering any goal. This simple knowledge will enable you to create and control your own personal universe. So what are you waiting for? ACT ON IT!

Making Weight Loss a Successful New Year's Resolution

Weight loss is one of the most popular New Year's resolutions, but it can also be one of the hardest to achieve and maintain if not approached appropriately. It is true many people lose weight each year as part of their New Year's resolutions, but it is also true that many of those people later gain some or all of that weight back. To make weight loss a successful goal in the new year, weight loss should be seen as creating a lifestyle change, rather than a temporary race to shed pounds.

Whether you want to lose 10 pounds or 100 plus pounds, successful weight loss is about lifestyle modifications. The key is to start slow and set realistic goals for yourself. A good place to begin is to cut down on sugar. Excess sugar in the body that does not get burned ultimately turns into fat. Maybe you know you already consume too much sugar such as sodas, desserts and snacks, or maybe you don't realize how much sugar you are really consuming. Many products contain more sugar than you realize. Read the labels of all food and drinks you consume to see how much sugar is in your regular diet. Chances are you can cut out some sugar.

Eat regularly. One mistake people make when trying to lose weight is skipping meals. This is unfortunate because skipping meals only starves the body of the healthy nutrients that it needs to regulate itself and be sufficient in losing weight. If your schedule keeps you from eating meals at regular meal times, try to carry healthy snacks to space throughout the day. Healthy snacks every few hours such as a cup of yogurt, a quarter cup of almonds, a piece of fresh fruit, or other easy healthy snacks will help you keep your metabolism on target and keep you from crashing.

If you are unsure of how to begin your weight loss program or how to stay on track, you may want to try a medical weight loss program under the care of a Board Certified Bariatric Physician. A Bariatric physician is a medical doctor who is specially trained in weight loss management and in the treatment and management of related medical conditions.

A program under a doctor's care can help you fulfill all aspects of weight loss and take into account your age, genes, medical history, metabolism, and lifestyle choices, which all play a role in weight loss and weight management.

New Year's weight loss resolutions can be frustrating but they don't have to be. With the proper guidance and support you can change the way you look and feel for a lifetime.

New Year's Motivation and Its Role In Weight Loss

One of the best times to begin a commitment to lose weight is at the start of a new year. Most people are more energetic to stay focused towards that overall goal, especially during the first month of a new year. The majority of people are amply motivated, so effort will be the greatest resulting in a much better devotion to the task.

Jump on this opportunity and use it to your advantage. The new year just started so it's not too late to begin with a resolution to lose weight and develop a healthier life.

If you are truly motivated to lose weight, you'll be willing to make important changes in the way you live your life. You will be willing to take the steps necessary to move towards accomplishing this goal. That's why motivation is key to help create success.

Regardless of what is trying to be accomplished, when a person is motivated they will be willing to make sacrifices in order to achieve their goal. For instance, if someone is truly motivated to learn a new sport, then this person will do whatever it takes to ensure they learn the new skill.

That would most likely mean hours of practicing, possibly taking classes, reading books, watching training videos, etc. Digesting all that is available in order to become proficient at the new sport.

The point is, only someone who is truly motivated to learn the new sport will do all this. They will take action and through consistent effort they will gradually improve and eventually become proficient. Sitting on the couch and merely hoping to get better at a sport will do nothing to improve the situation.

Find your motivation for weight loss, the true reason why you want to shed those excess pounds. Maybe you are motivated to lose weight in order to get ready for the summer beach season that's five months away and want to look good in a bathing suit. Maybe you are going to be in a wedding as a bridesmaid/groomsman and want to fit in the tighter fitting formal wear associated with this ceremony. Possibly you went to the doctor recently and were advised that losing weight should be a priority for you due to health risks associated with being overweight or obese.

Whatever the reason why you want to lose weight, motivation is key for success. Find what is your motivating factor and use that as your fuel to keep you going until you accomplish your overall goal.

New Year's Resolution to Exercise More - But What Type of Exercise Is Best to Shed Fat Fast?

Plan to overeat this holiday season... check.

Plan to feel guilty about it and resolve to burn off those extra pounds and then some come January 1st... check.

The health clubs will be packed in the coming weeks in the wake of upcoming waistline disaster... the holiday season. Anxious to regain a body that does not cause us to shudder as we look in the mirror, we will line up at the treadmills and the dumbbell racks. Spin class and Pilates. Swimming and yoga. But which of these exercises will be the MOST efficient at helping us to burn the fat?

Exercise of variable forms will provide health benefit of equal variety. This is true. However, this article specifically addresses what exercise is best suited to burn through those stubborn fat stores that have accumulated over the past several years of eating a little too much, and not quite moving enough.

Let's quickly address the different types of exercise; (1) cardiovascular, (2) weight-resistant, and (3) flexibility. Cardiovascular, more familiarly known as aerobic exercise, deals with increasing the heart rate for a sustained amount of time. Weight-resistant exercise deals with utilizing muscle movements against a resistant force with actual weights, machines, or gravity. While extremely important to overall fitness, flexibility training has little impact on fat loss, so we will eliminate that type form this equation.

Cardiovascular exercise creates an environment inside that body that demands more oxygen to be delivered to the tissues, therefore, the heart rate increases. Hence the term "aerobic." This type of exercise is thought to be beneficial to fat loss, as when the body performs within a certain aerobic demand, measurable by heart rate, the body will utilize fat efficiently as a fuel source.

Weight-resistant exercise creates an environment of physical force against muscle tissue, overtime demanding that the muscle tissues increase in size and tonicity. Since muscle tissue is far more metabolically active than fat tissue, the theory exists that the more muscle you create, the higher your metabolism is at rest. Basically, you'll burn more gas, even if you're not moving.

In today's world of "multitask or die", time constraints leave us with big decisions to make. "Since I don't have several hours every day to devote to the treadmill, then the weights, which should I concentrate on?" Research out of the Duke University Medical Center has laid out the answer.

Researchers compared three groups of people; (1) people doing performed resistant training in the form of weight lifting 3 days per week, (2) people who performed cardiovascular training to the tune of approximately 12 miles per week, and (3) people who did both. Group 1, the weight-resistant group, logged about 180 minutes of activity each week and actually gained weight, although the gain was attributed to increased muscle mass. Group 2, the cardiovascular training group, logged about 133 minutes of activity each week and lost more fat than Group 1. Group 3, those completing both methods of exercise, logged double the time-commitment and produced mixed results. This rigorous method helped participants to lose weight and fat mass, however, did not significantly reduce body mass not fat mass over the cardiovascular group.

Lead researcher Leslie Willis had this to say; "No one type of exercise will be best for every health benefit. However, it might be time to reconsider the conventional wisdom that resistance training alone can induce changes in body mass or fat mass due to an increase in metabolism, as our study found no change." Co-author Cris Slentz added, "Balancing time commitments against health benefits, our study suggests that aerobic exercise is the best option for reducing fat mass and body mass. It's not that resistance training isn't good for you; it's just not very good at burning fat."

Why New Year's Resolutions Are A Problem Rather Than a Solution

This year I am going to:

Climb Mt KilimanjaroGet a PromotionLose 8 stone

New Year's resolutions are more often than not (for a lot of us), a failure. According to researchers, the first two weeks of January are resolution feel good time; however by week three most of us are slipping and sliding; with many back to square one by March. Why?

Unrealistic Resolutions

For example my aforementioned resolutions are simply unrealistic, and though they may seem overtly so, many people's more sedate resolutions are almost as impractical. They might not even be in alignment with their internal view. It's not possible to positively reaffirm resolutions that you know deep down are going to be impossible to hit. This means it is impossible to keep these resolutions and even setting them can be damaging to your self-esteem.

Unrealistic Expectations

Sometimes people believe that if they lose weight or sort out money worries that their lives will become all the more fulfilled or even entirely changed for the better. This is seldom the case. Imagine yourself at your goal weight - really imagine it. Do you think you will love different people, do you think you will laugh at different things? Nope - neither do I. Losing weight wont fundamentally change who we are - it is not a panacea for all ills. Sometimes this realisation creates a 'why bother' attitude and people revert back to their old ways.

People don't want to Change

Many people come up with resolutions without thinking of the full implication on their lifestyle. Most don't consider the root of the problem or the bad habits that create the problem in the first case. This makes for a fundamental flaw in changing their ways and in turn creates a high rate of failure.

How to Change

I know I have just given resolutions a bit of a bashing; it doesn't have to be this way. Here are some tips to make them work:

Focus on one resolution
Be specific about resolutions. Deciding to lose weight is too loose of a goal; losing seven pounds in two months is not.
Small steps are central to success. Plan your goal into smaller steps and you'll be likely to reach the overall goal.
When you do reach milestones - celebrate - each one is a success in itself.
Focus on new behaviours. You have to create new thought patterns to change a habit. Changing habits is about trying new things and not 'not trying to do' old things.
Remain in the present - there is always something you can do right now towards meeting your goal.
Have someone you can report your success and failures to. This interest increases your chances of success.
Learn to laugh - you will slip, you will fall and you will have setbacks. However, don't take yourself too seriously or get too down. Remember, the mark of success is not how few times you fall down; it's the number of times you get back up.

New Year's Resolutions - Have Your Own Biggest Loser Contest

New Year's Resolutions. We make 'em. We break 'em. We try to keep them. We fail. We keep them for a day or two, maybe a week or two, and then lose momentum. What's a person to do? How do we motivate ourselves to stay on track?

Oftentimes we set unrealistic goals for New Year's resolutions. All the things we tried and failed in, in the prior year, we might try to bundle up and make into a New Year's Resolution.

We fail because the things we resolve to do are hard for us. If they were easy, they would have already been accomplished in our lives. They might be easy for others, but they are challenging for us. And therefore, we fail. We have weaknesses we try to overcome, and we just don't seem to have the strength to do it.

One problem many people try to overcome with a New Year's Resolution is a weight problem. People have enjoyed all the goodies between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and now want to lose weight. But in some cases, the problem extends beyond the Thanksgiving/Christmas season. Some people, actually many people according to statistics, struggle with weight problems all year long.

Why is this? A lot has to do with the American diet. It is heavy in fat, fried foods, sugars, refined foods and all those things that put weight. It is light in fresh fruits and vegetables, and lean meats, the very things that help someone lose weight.

Shows such as "The Biggest Loser" are popular because it shows people able to persevere and overcome their weight problem. But what if there were a personal challenge to lose weight and you could win money for doing so? Would that provide motivation to the New Year's Resolution?

Probably. Think of going to your friends and bragging about how much you lost and how much money you made because you lost that weight. Wouldn't that be exciting? And what if you could get all your friends to join you and have your own personal "biggest loser" contest.

Success happens when we are having fun, enjoying ourselves, working towards a goal that gives us a reward, have the resources we need to help us along our way.

In actuality, there is now a way to have fun with our New Year's Resolutions to lose weight. There is a way to have fun. There is a way to get paid for meeting our goals. This may be a new trend in New Year's Resolutions... resolutions we, and our friends, may enjoy meeting and keeping.

Do you want to find out how you can enjoy the challenge of a New Year's Resolution, have nutritional help, and make some money for winning? Click here http://xbodyhealth.com/
Cheryl Jones has been connected to the holistic health industry for many years and says that next to a relationship with God, health is most important. Without it, you can't enjoy anything else. Without good health, you can't enjoy your family. Without good health, it is difficult to hold down a good-paying job. Health is so important. Make it part of your New Year's Resolutions.

Don't Wait Until New Years to Lose Weight

Thanksgiving, Christmas, holiday parties, New Years, bowl games, the NFL. The events where you can overindulge during November and December are endless. You doubt you can lose weight during this time and you will probably gain a few pounds. That's why New Year's resolutions are so popular. They are rife with promises to lose weight, eat better or exercise. You may even plan your "resolution" right before Thanksgiving knowing you will be indulging for the next few weeks.

Then New Years comes and goes and you begin the promised changes with the energy of a zealot. You head to the gym where you find each packed with fellow resolutes. You pass on the double cheese burger for a salad. You may even join a weight loss program. You're excited, sure that this is the year where you make the health changes you promised yourself every year.

Three weeks in (longer than most resolutions last) you make your first excuse. A family member's birthday party has your favorite pizza and wings. A couple of slices of pizza and three or four wings don't do the job but double that does. A few days later and the bed speaks louder than the gym. Pretty soon the Super Bowl arrives with its more parties, food and drinks.

New Year's Weight Loss, February's Weight Gain

Your New Year's resolution is really a January hope. It lasts a few weeks because the reason you started the resolution after the holidays is the same reason you stopped it by early February. There is always a reason to start tomorrow. Each month has built-in excuses not to exercise, not to eat healthier and not to stop drinking calorie containing drinks. You are the politician who finds herself campaigning year round. You view Thanksgiving through New Years as the busy time where eating right and exercise are difficult but in reality you are always too busy to make healthy changes.

Start Losing Weight Today

The time to start your weight loss, the time to eat healthier, the time to exercise is now. Plan, prepare and start. You will have days when it's not easy or "better" alternatives intervene. Those days don't start Thanksgiving Day and they don't end January 1. Learn to live with occasional lapses but focus on changing habits and behaviors that will last past the end of the month. Learn to eat one cookie instead of three. Eat carrots instead of chips and skip the creamy dips and dressings. Learn to pass on the second glass of wine or the supersize soda.

Turn exercise into a part of your daily routine. Don't obsess over it, thirty minutes a day of aerobic exercise or resistance training is plenty. Don't jump into it thinking you will become the next Michael Phelps or Mia Hamm. Look for routines you can sustain without burning out or injuring yourself. You don't have to yell through your last repetition or bend over in pain after your run. You will benefit from exerting yourself passed your comfort zone but you don't have to feel the pain three days later.

New Years is an excellent time to reflect and reassess your priorities. But it is not the only time. November 20 will work too. Any day is a good day to make positive changes in your life.

Say NO to a "Diet" New Year's Resolution and YES to Lifestyle Changes

Happy New Year! It's time to ring in the New Year! For years, people have been using this special occasion as a motivator to drop the weight they have been struggling to lose all year round. As a registered dietitian, I encourage my clients to steer clear of New Year's resolutions in order to avoid disappointment in oneself. You may have the best of intentions when you resolve to lose weight or exercise more as the New Year begins, but somehow, life happens and you often find yourself going back to your old ways. Instead, this year believe that it's always the right time to make healthy, life changing goals for yourself.

If you are one of those people who need to "start over" with each New Year, then let's try a different approach for 2013! This New Year, instead of making a diet and weight loss resolution, try and focus on improving your health by making weekly nutrition and fitness goals. Decide what goal you will work towards for the coming week, and go for it! Log your progress and check in with yourself mid-week and at weeks end. If you want to repeat the goal the following week, go ahead. Or, pick another nutrition or fitness goal for the coming week.

Don't look at this year's resolution as a temporary change; look at it as a lifestyle change. Making too many changes at once can cause you to burn out before the end of January, and cause you to break your commitment. Therefore, instead of changing your entire way of living all at once, try making these small changes everyday. Work your way SLOWLY to a healthier you.

Try some of these nutrition and fitness goals for the coming year and you'll see how great you feel.

1. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Every day add a new fruit or veggie to your menu. Eat it raw or try it in a new recipe. Test out different cooking methods with your vegetables. Some examples are roasting, steaming, baking, and BBQing your veggies.

2. Switch to 100% whole grain. If you're still eating white bread and pasta, slowly switch to whole grains. Whole grains contain more fiber and nutrients and will keep you fuller for a longer period of time. If you are having a hard time making this change, then compromise. For example, if you're making a pasta dish, make it half with whole wheat pasta and half with regular pasta until you develop a taste for 100% whole wheat.

3. Portion control. Work your way to smaller portions! This will help control your calorie consumption. If you typically use a big dinner plate and fill the whole plate, try using a smaller size plate. You may eat more than what you need to be satisfied if you have a pile of food sitting in front of you.

4. Focus on MyPlate. Make a pact with yourself to follow the MyPlate method. When filling your plate, half should be vegetables and fruit and the other half should be divided between a serving of grains (about a ½ cup) and a serving of protein (3-4 ounces, about the size of a deck of cards).

5. Limit the sweets. No one says you need to avoid all sweets. The key is moderation. If you enjoy dessert and sweets several times a day, make a goal for yourself to limit sweets to either once per day, or even once or twice a week. Limiting your sweets may even help you lose your craving for it! Small, measurable goals are the key to success.

6. Swap out the soda and juice. These beverages are loaded with sugar and greatly contribute to your daily caloric intake. Eliminating just one can of soda a day (12 ounce can = 120 calories) can save you about 13 pounds a year! And let's be honest; most people don't only drink a can a day. So imagine how many extra pounds in one year are contributed from soda alone. Again, slowly make a goal to eliminate these empty calories by limiting your intake to one cup each day, then one cup every other day etc. Substitute water with a squeeze of lemon or lime for a refreshing beverage.

7. Begin a walking program. Commit to a daily walk, either first thing in the morning or after dinner. Start off slowly and gradually build up your speed and distance. Find a walking buddy to keep you company.

8. Schedule your workouts. Just like you schedule a doctor's appointment or a lunch date with a friend, schedule your workout on the calendar and make it a part of your routine.

9. Plan YOU time. Make sure you are taking care of your basic needs such as eating and sleeping. It is very important to practice self-care so all your basic needs are met. It will then be easier to listen to what your body needs in terms of food and exercise.

10. Practice Mindful Eating. Since you have vowed not to diet this year, practice being mindful when you are eating. Listen for your hunger and fullness signals and respond appropriately. Don't eat when you are not hungry, yet don't let yourself get to the ravenous point either. When eating, stop midway and ask yourself if you are still hungry. If not, stop and save the rest for another time.

One step at a time. That's the way to achieve your goals in the New Year. Leave the quick fix diets behind. Making small changes over the next year will free you from dieting and have you living a healthy life in no time.

Creating Life Changing New Year's Resolutions

In just over a week we will be saying good-bye to 2012 and ringing in 2013. With the new year comes "New Year's Resolutions". Do you remember yours from last year? How did you do?

If you didn't follow through with your resolution don't feel bad. Most people don't. The problem is because the resolution is usually the result of an in the moment decision or something that you know you need to change and this seems like the appropriate time to change it. So you simply say, "This year I'm going to be healthier!" or "I'm going to lose 50 pounds!"

Both of those sound great, but how are you going to achieve them? What is healthier anyhow? If you only made it to the gym regularly for one month last year and this year you get there regularly for 2 months. Technically that was "healthier" but, I doubt that is what you had in mind when you said that you were going to be healthier this year.

Or what about the "I'm going to lose 50 pounds!" At least here we have something to measure. You either lose 50 pounds or you don't. Good start, but for this to work you need to develop a strategy. 50 pounds is a significant amount of weight and you need a plan for how you are going to lose it over the next year. This is where most people get stuck. How are you going to lose it? You could start walking, you could crash diet and regain it all before the year ends, you could join a gym, etc.

For our example, let's say you decide to join a cutting-edge functional training gym that focuses on resistance training.

So we want to lose 50 pounds over the next year, that comes out to just under one pound per week. In three months we should be down 12 pounds to be on track. In one month, 4 pounds. All we are doing is breaking the goal down into smaller chunks that are more manageable to handle and so we see short-term success to stay motivated.

Now, do you want to know a secret to successfully achieving the goal?

Focus on the process, not the goal.

This means to put all of your energy and focus into what you need to do each day and each week to reach your goal. This means that each week you need to get in three workouts and keep your nutrition in check. After one month you need to have worked out 12 times and by the end of the year you need to have worked out 156 times. If you simply focus on the 3 workouts a week by the end of the year the 50 pounds will be shed.

How To Look And Feel Fitter And Firmer By New Year's Day WITHOUT Going Without

On average people put on 5-7lbs over the Christmas period, however, there are people who put on a stone or even two stone.

Although this weight gain seems to be the norm, it doesn't have to happen to you.

In fact, you can look and feel fitter and firmer by New Years Eve without going without.

If you are like most people you will want to enjoy your food and maybe even have the odd alcoholic drink over Christmas. With the right strategy in place you can still do this whilst toning up and even losing weight.

Having a strategy will mean you can still have the things you want, but it doesn't mean you can go overboard. It just means plans will be put in place to limit the effects of indulging yourself over the festive period.

So what plans can you put in place over the Christmas period which can help you look and feel fitter and firmer by New Years Eve without going without?

Strategy 1 - Before the big night of indulgence

If you know you have a big night out planned of eating and drinking, then before you go out make sure you do a heavy weight training session. This is because it works with the insulin response caused by eating carb rich foods.

When you eat foods high in carbs, it releases your storing hormone insulin. Most of the time this is a bad thing as it leads to food being stored as fat. However, if you do a heavy weight training session before you eat a meal high in carbs then instead of insulin telling your body to store the food as fat, it tells your body to store the food in the muscle. This will help you to gain muscle rather than gain fat.

When I say a heavy weight training session it is relative to the person and their current strength. Whatever fitness level you are you will want to be lifting weights for anywhere between 6-12 reps to failure. It is also best to do a full body workout rather than working on a few specific muscle groups. This is because the more muscles you work, the more muscles will receive the food in order to build bigger and stronger. If you can't get to the gym to use weights, you can always do a bodyweight workout at home instead.

Strategy 2 - During the big night of indulgence

During your big nights out over the Christmas period make sure you fill up on protein and water before you eat your deserts and drink alcohol. This will help blunt the effects of weight gain due to eating excess carbs and drinking alcohol. Carbs alone or carbs and fat produce a massive insulin response which leads to fat gain, however, if you add in protein then it decreases the insulin response. Even though you will be doing a heavy weight training session before the meal to work with the insulin response to help you build muscle, you still want to blunt the insulin response as much as possible. This is because even though it will be pushing the food to the muscle because of the workout, too much insulin can still lead to fat gain as well as muscle gain.

By filling up on protein and water first is a great way to ensure you can have your treats with as little damage as possible to your physique.

Strategy 3 - End of the big night of indulgence

At the end of the night, whether you are indulging in foods you normally wouldn't eat or if you are drinking alcohol it is important that you go to sleep as early as possible.

It is the lack of sleep which turns a night of treating yourself into a few days, a week or even a month on continuous cheating.

During the night when you are asleep is when your hormones reset, however, if you go to sleep too late and don't give your hormones enough time to reset, then the next day your hormones are out of whack. This then leads to uncontrollable cravings for food and turns your 1 night of treating yourself into a longer binge.

Ideally you would still want to be going to sleep by 10.30 pm, however, if you are going to a Christmas party it may not finish until the early hours of the morning. If this is the case then go home and go to sleep as early as possible. The earlier you go to sleep the better and the less chance you will have struggling with cravings the next day.

Before you go to sleep it would also be a good idea to drink a large glass of water, especially if you have been drinking alcohol. Dehydration is another reason why people have uncontrollable cravings the next day as they mistake the signs of dehydration as sings of hunger.

Strategy 4 - The day after the big night of indulgence

The day after treating yourself is very important as it dictates whether it remains just a treat or if it turns into a binge. It also contributes to whether the night before is going to lead to weight gain or not or even possibly helps you to lose weight and tone up.

The morning after your treat night it is a good idea to go for a walk for at least an hour before you eat any food. This will help increase your metabolism and fat burning, however, it will also help de-stress your body and lower cortisol to help prevent weight gain around the midsection. You should also make sure you drink lots of water, especially if you have been drinking alcohol. Usually it is recommended you drink 1 litre for every 25kg of bodyweight, but if you have been drinking alcohol then you will want to drink at least 1.5 litres of water of every 25kg of bodyweight in order to re-hydrate your body. Re-hydrating the body is essential in order to recover quickly from the effects of the alcohol.

The foods you eat the day after indulging yourself are extremely important. Because of eating high carb foods or drinking alcohol the day before, it is important to have a low carb day. This means you should stick to meat, fish, eggs, vegetables and nuts only. Alternating high carb days with low carb days is a good way to trick your body into losing fat and overcoming a weight loss plateau. Ideally you would do this using natural carbs which are Elimination Diet friendly, however, as you are have been treating yourself then it is a great way to limit the negative effects and manipulate your treats into your favour to help you lose weight. This is definitely not a long term solution, but it is a good short term solution so you can have your treats and still work towards your goals.

It is also a good idea to exercise the day after your night out as well. You either want to do another heavy weight training session to build muscle or a high intensity interval training workout to burn off the calories from the night before. Your high intensity interval training session should last no longer than 30 minutes, this is because your body will be under stress by the food you ate the day before or due to the alcohol. Exercising intensely for over 30 minutes will cause the body too much stress and will cause you more harm than good so you want to keep your workout short and sweet.

Another tip is to take milk thistle. Milk thistle helps support your liver in the detoxification process. Taking milk thistle the day after drinking alcohol or eating foods which are usually banned will help your liver to detox the alcohol or the toxic substances in the foods faster so your liver can get back to burning fat.

If you use these 4 strategies around any nights out you have planned or any time you are planning on treating yourself to usually banned foods, then it will keep you on track towards your goals and will mean you don't have to go without over Christmas and you can still be feeling fitter and firmer by New Years day.

These strategies won't help you lose a stone in a week or produce amazing results (I'm sure you wouldn't be expecting that anyway if your drinking alcohol and eating chocolate), but it will help you to stay on track and lose a couple of pounds over the Christmas period whilst everyone else is gaining weight.

If you have any friends or family members you care about that you don't want to gain weight over Christmas then make sure you share this article with them.
