Your Post Gastric Sleeve Surgery Diet

The gastric sleeve procedure is a surgery that involves removing a large portion of your stomach. The remaining portion of your stomach will be converted into the shape of a sleeve. This procedure can help you lose a large amount of weight in a short amount of time. However, in order to get the most out of your surgery, you will have to follow a strict diet. Below is an explanation of the post gastric sleeve diet:

The First Two Days

During the first two days after surgery, you will only be allowed to consume liquids.

Flat sodas, herbal tea, sugar free fruit juices and sugar-free Kool-Aid are examples of some of the beverages that you can consume during the first two days after your surgery.

You can also have beef or chicken broth, sugar-free gelatin and sugar-free popsicles. Citrus juices and coffee will need to be avoided for at least three weeks after surgery. Those types of beverages can irritate the stomach. It is very important for you to make sure that you consume the liquids slowly.

Day Three Through Week Two

You will still need to follow a liquid diet during this phase, but you will be allowed to consume sugar-free milk products. Skim milk, soy milk, sugar-free instant jello, light, plain-flavored yogurt and sugar-free pudding are examples of some of the things that you can consume during phase two of your diet. You will also be required to drink protein shakes.

Weeks Three Through Eight

You will be able to start eating pureed foods starting at week three. Pureed food is food that has been put through a strainer or processed in a blender. A good rule of thumb to remember during this phase is if you can chew it, then you should not eat it. You may find that you are unable to tolerate pureed foods. If that occurs, then you may need to follow a liquid diet for a few days.

Pureed vegetables, low-fat cream soup, blenderized fish, mashed winter squash and blenderized eggs are some of the many foods that you can consume during this phase of your diet. You can also have unsweetened fruit juice. Additionally, you are encouraged to continue drinking your protein shakes during this phase.

Weeks Nine Through Twelve

You can begin eating soft foods starting at week nine. Boneless baked fish, vegetables, canned peaches and scrambled eggs are examples of foods that you can eat during this phase. During this phase, you should space your meals four or five hours apart from one another. You should make sure that you are still consuming your protein shakes between your meals.

Month Four

You can gradually ease into eating a normal diet starting at month four. Even though you can begin eating normal foods again, it is important to note there are some foods that you may still have a problem tolerating. Some of those foods include corn chips, fried foods, seeds, nuts and greasy foods. When you are eating, you need to make sure eat slowly and avoid overindulging.
