Why You Get Love Handles and How to Get Rid of Them

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

We have all seen them...

We all hate them, but how the hell do we get them!!

I get asked this a lot... actually a hell of a lot.

And it's a really simple answer: You eat fat too many carbohydrates.

The storage site on your hips is a direct indication of how many carbohydrates you have in your diet. So if you are storing a lot of fat around that area you know you need to limit your overall intake.

Now when I say carbohydrates, I mean the high sugar/high glycemic, starchy ones that people tend to love so much, such as rice, potatoes, pasta & bread.

So why does this happen?

Well it starts as soon as you eat a meal containing carbohydrates, once you have eaten them the body breaks them down into glucose. Glucose then stimulates the release of Insulin in the pancreas, which then transports the glucose into the cells for energy. This is a very important process however providing the cells with too much glucose over a sustained period of time can cause problems.

The body can only store a certain amount of glucose in the muscle cells and liver, any excess can be stored as fat.

So if you sustain a high carbohydrate diet over a long period of time not only will you be storing a large proportion of fat, you will also be de-sensitising your cells to impact that insulin has on them, creating something called insulin resistance.

When your body become insulin resistance, it basically means that the insulin being transported around the body which is supposed to be directed into the muscles and liver, cannot get there and so insulin levels stay high, leading to a high amount of fat storage.

An easy way to check if you are insulin resistant is to check how much fat you store underneath your scapula or shoulder blade, as this gives a direct indication. Any more than 10% and you no you have a problem. The picture below shows a high amount of shoulder blade fat!!

So how do we get rid of this Fat and become more insulin sensitive

Well again it's fairly easy, as it all can be dome through nutrition. If you remove all starchy carbohydrates from your diet (rice, potatoes, pasta) and simply concentrate on getting your good carbs from green leafy vegetables, then you will notice a dramatic reduction in both the size of the 'love handles' and the amount of fat you are storing underneath your shoulder blade.

This happens because you are reducing the overall level of insulin being shunted around your system constantly, thus allowing the body to stop storing it as fat. This in turn will allow the body to reduce the resistance it has to the hormone insulin and start to normalize the reaction the body has to it.

Now that may sound very complicated, but trust me it isn't!

If you are storing fat at the love handles, remove starchy carbohydrates from your diet and watch that area dramatically shrink.

Let me know how you get on.
