This popular new low carbohydrates diet promising crazy fat loss, muscle gain and improved body composition but will it work for you? The diet's protocol focuses on manipulating your carb intake for a certain period before re-introducing carbs at a special time in the day.
Carb backloading has really gotten a lot of attention lately and I get a lot of questions about my opinion on it. You would probably like me to say that it's the greatest low-carb diet to come along, but the truth is that I have some real reservations about it.
For guys that are overweight and have a high fat content, say 25% or so, carb backloading may be helpful. For guys that are already in good shape, with fat percentages around 10 or 15%, carbohydrate backloading is probably overkill at best. At worst, it could very well cause you to lose size.
The Science Behind Manipulating Your Carbohydrate Intake
Most of the principles or guidelines involved in carbohydrate backloading are things that you're probably already doing. Eating low carbs throughout the day and then getting your carbs later in the day, after your workout, is what I like to call "earning your carbs" and it can do a lot of good things for you. It will cut your calories and create a calorie deficit and can really help to burn fat and get you lean. However, there are some problems I see with the premise of carb backloading, as opposed to eating low carbs most of the day.
The Idea Behind Carbohydrate Backloading
The whole idea behind carb backloading is to go very low carb throughout the day and then load up on carbs at night. In some cases, carb backloading creator John Kiefer even suggests getting all of those carbs in one meal. He also suggests that you go very low carb for about ten days before putting carbs back into your diet.
For guys that are heavy, like I said before, this may be a good way to get some fat loss going. For guys who are already fairly low in fat percentage, though, this could actually lead to losing that size you've worked so hard for. I can easily see guys flattening out well before the ten days are up.
If you really want to give carbohydrate backloading a try, it probably won't hurt you and it may even help you, at least in the short term. However, I think getting your carbs intelligently and earning your carbs is a much better plan for most guys than carb backloading.
