With the holiday season in many parts of the world fast approaching, you may want to know how to avoid genetically modified food. If you are eating out a lot with family and friends who are not so aware of a problem with this food, it can be hard to retain your standards while you refrain from rocking the boat.

Even when you are dining out at restaurants, you can avoid the worst offenders, by asking questions before you go. All good restaurants value their customers. Some may be rather less than open with their answers, which should raise alarm bells.

Some of the most common genetically modified foods are oils, in particular soy, cottonseed, canola and corn. So avoid any fried or baked food, unless you are satisfied that none of these oils have been used.

Margarine and vegetable oil will inevitably be from these sources. Some restaurants make a blend of oils, and will add these cheaper oils to eek out the more expensive olive oil.

Virtually all processed food contain some ingredients which will most likely have a GM derivative. So go for the freshly prepared foods, rather than any which may contain processed ingredients. Sauces and desserts tend to have GM ingredients.

Apart from the common oils, anything made with corn or soy should be avoided for the same reason. This includes soy (flour, lecithin, protein, sauce), textured vegetable protein, tofu, tamari, corn (syrup, meal), lactic acid, citric acid, fructose, dextrose, maltodextrin and others.

In many parts of the world, rbGH is banned, but not in America. rbGH is a genetically modified hormone that is injected into lactating cows to increase their milk yield. This is the latest in a long line of health problems with milk. It's really best to avoid all dairy altogether.

Virtually all farm animals are fed with some form of genetically modified food, whether it is from soy, corn or canola. This means all meat, all animal products, including eggs, will contain some form, even if it is not direct.

Sadly, there are some fresh foods that have been genetically modified, that are now in the market place. Hawaiian papaya, zucchini and squash are among the most common.

Other foods that widely contain GM ingredients are artificial sweeteners (so this includes most soft drinks), infant formula, protein powder, chocolate, ice cream, bread, cereal, tomato sauce, protein powder, baking powder, alcohol, peanut butter, meat substitute and many others.

Learning how to avoid genetically modified food can make your life appear to be overly cautious. You may be labelled as obsessive. Don't let that put you off. It's your health at stake. If others choose to be less than healthy, don't join them by default.

Favouring organic restaurants, who guarantee (in writing) that they don't buy any of their food from genetically modified sources is one of the best things you can do to shape a better world for tomorrow. It may mean eating out less often, but you are doing your body and your children a favour.

When eating out at family and friends, when you really don't want to make a fuss, here are some tips on how to avoid genetically modified food, or how to recover when you have.

Eat before you go out. This way, you won't want to eat large portions.Drink as if you are driving.Eat organic food in your normal diet.Make sure your diet contains foods which detox your body daily. A good one is blue green algae from a known toxin free source.Consider regular detoxing processes, such as coffee enemas or other beneficial colon cleanses.Avoid medication wherever you can. And when you can't, seek out better ways of treatment, such as homeopathy.
