Tips to Help Keep the Thanksgiving Holiday Under Control

The Thanksgiving holiday is almost here, and if you are concerned with losing weight, here are a few tips to help you prepare yourself so that this holiday occurs in a relatively healthy manner.
For most, this is a cherished time to spend with family and friends, some of whom you may not get to see often during the year. These times should be enjoyed and celebrated wholeheartedly, but it does help immensely if some self control is maintained in regards to all the food and treats that will be present during this holiday. It is expected that more than usual amount of food and drinks will be consumed, but the whole experience does not need to be terribly detrimental to someone who is concerned with improving their health and the amount they weigh.
Even though Thanksgiving is just one day, you may be wondering how can one day of eating a bit more than usual cause that much damage to your body? "The average American will consume more that 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving day alone. Surprisingly, most of these calories come from the all-day snacking in front of the TV while watching parades and sporting events."
What are the activities your friends and family do on Thanksgiving? Watch the parades or football, or basketball games? What about the snacks and drinks that are consumed during those times without dinner being served yet. Yes 5,000 calories does sound ridiculous, but when you take into account the whole day's snacking moments, it does occur, unless you have some type of control throughout the entire time you are at the get together.
Here are four tips to help keep the calorie amount as low as possible during your Thanksgiving celebration, yet you will still be able to enjoy yourself and have a good time.
Beware Of Those Snacking Trays
The snack bowls set in front of the television or on the tables can be pits of disaster especially when your hand goes into automatic mode while watching the television. If you going to watch TV, be in a spot that is not in reach of snacks. If the temptation is too much in plain sight, get something that is not going disastrous to your healthy eating commitment. Just because you can't see the fruits, doesn't mean the host does not have them. Politely ask and you will probably find an apple, orange or pear which would be perfect since thees are only about 100 calories each.
Watch So Your Dinner Serving Is Not Gigantic
Dinner time, don't overload your plate with food that you know is way too much. If you are determined to have every spot on your plate filled, at least put items that are healthy options like salad, turkey, ham and properly prepared vegetables are perfect items to put on your plate.
Consume Lots of Water
Drinking lots of water not just at the culmination of your meal but all throughout the day will really fill in the empty space your stomach may have. Plus water helps aide with digestion, in addition to helping you feel more full, so you won't be in the mood to eat more food. Try to drink two or three glasses of water during your dinner and you may find you don't need as much food to get full.
Don't Eat the Super Fattening Stuff
All those desserts that are generally brought out at the end of the feast can be the nail in the coffin. If you can't say 'no' to the options, try to pick the healthier choice like jello or cake that has no frosting. If that's not possible, just take in half of the slice that is given to you.
Try to Get a Family Walk In
A great way to get your metabolism going helping aide digestion and at the same time spend time with the family members present at your Thanksgiving holiday celebration. Once everyone has had a moment to relax for a bit after dinner, recommend everyone who is capable to take a nice walk around the neighborhood - if weather permits and it is safe. Not only will you burn 150-450 calories, but this is a great chance to hang out with members of your family that you may not have had a chance to speak to in long time.
